Paver patios built for Tri-Valley clay in Livermore, CA

What you see on our Livermore patio is a clean two-tone pattern with a dark border. What you do not see is 9 inches of excavation, a crushed rock base compacted in three lifts, a slope away from the house and a drain that carries roof and surface water to the street.

Two-tone paver patio with a dark border built by Royal Outdoor Solutions in Livermore, CA

Why does drainage matter so much in Livermore?

The Tri-Valley sits on clay. A week of January rain saturates the soil under a patio and it swells; in July it dries and shrinks. A patio on a thin base has no defense against that, and water sitting against the house finds the foundation.

Many lots in Livermore and Pleasanton sit flat on clay and do not drain on their own even with the right slope. Those get a French drain along the low edge, a channel drain at the house or a catch basin tied to a downspout, so water has a designed path to the street.

When should you build a patio in the Tri-Valley?

Fall. Excavation and compaction need dry ground, and a base compacted in wet clay does not reach full density. Summer builds in Livermore mean setting pavers in 100-degree heat, which is slower work, and spring calendars fill fast.

  • Excavation of 8 to 10 inches
  • Crushed rock base of 6 inches or more, compacted in 2 to 3 inch lifts
  • Slope of about a quarter inch per foot away from the house
  • Edge restraint and polymeric sand on every job

Livermore: frequently asked questions

How much does a paver patio cost in Livermore?+

Most paver patios run $28 to $45 per square foot installed in 2026. A standard 300 to 450 square foot backyard patio usually lands between $9,500 and $19,000. A drain, when the lot needs one, is priced as its own line.

Why do patios get wavy in the Tri-Valley?+

Water gets through the joints, saturates a thin base and the clay under it, and the base washes out in low spots. It is a base and drainage problem, not a paver problem, and it is preventable.

Does every Livermore patio need a French drain?+

No. Some yards drain on their own once the slope is right. Flat lots on clay often do not, and we decide that on site during the estimate.

What should a patio quote list for the base?+

Excavation depth in inches, base material and depth with the word compacted, a slope or drainage plan, edge restraint and polymeric sand, and where the excavated soil is going.

Is financing available in Livermore?+

Yes, financing is available. Ask during your free on-site estimate.
