What did we build in Orinda?
The old walkway had almost no base, which is why it cracked and tilted. We excavated to about 8 inches, compacted the sub-grade and built a crushed rock base in lifts, sloped slightly away from the house. The new walkway is about 4 feet wide so two people can walk side by side.
The lawn and roots came out, the area was graded, and a compacted crushed rock base went down under a weed barrier and the turf. That base drains freely, so rain goes straight through the turf backing instead of pooling.
