Paver patios in Sunnyvale, CA

We have built in Sunnyvale more than once: a paver patio with a pavilion and, a few blocks away, a multi-tone patio. Both started as tired lawn over clay, which is what most Sunnyvale backyards are once you put a shovel in.

Paver patio with a dark soldier-course border and a wood pavilion built by Royal Outdoor Solutions in Sunnyvale, CA

What did we build in Sunnyvale?

The first project is a backyard patio with a dark border and a wood pavilion over the seating area. The pavilion posts were set on their own footings, separate from the paver base, so the patio around them never carries the weight of the roof.

The second is a multi-tone patio nearby. Different pattern, same build underneath: lawn and clay dug out, a compacted base, a slope that sends water away from the house, and polymeric sand in the joints.

Why do Sunnyvale patios usually price in the lower half?

Most Sunnyvale lots are flat, most have a side yard wide enough for a compact track loader, and very few need a retaining wall. Those are the line items that push a hillside job in Marin or the Oakland hills to the top of the range.

The clay does not change, though. Santa Clara Valley soil swells when it is wet and shrinks when it dries, so the base depth and the compaction cost about the same here as anywhere else in the Bay Area.

  • Side or dining patio, 150–250 sq ft: $5,500 – $10,000
  • Standard backyard patio, 300–450 sq ft: $9,500 – $19,000
  • Front walkway, 3–4 ft wide and 40–60 ft long: $5,000 – $11,000
  • Paver driveway, 450–600 sq ft: $15,000 – $23,000

What about the original Eichler-era slabs?

Plenty of Sunnyvale homes still have the original concrete patio or driveway. Breaking it out and hauling it away usually adds $3 to $6 per square foot, because it is heavy, slow work and the dump charges by weight. We put that line in writing so it does not show up later.

Sunnyvale: frequently asked questions

How much does a paver patio cost in Sunnyvale?+

Most paver patios in Sunnyvale run $28 to $45 per square foot installed in 2026. A standard 300 to 450 square foot backyard patio usually lands between $9,500 and $19,000, and Sunnyvale tends to sit in the lower half of that range because lots are flat and accessible.

How long does a patio install take in Sunnyvale?+

A 300 to 450 square foot patio usually takes five to eight working days: demolition and excavation, the base, laying and cutting the pavers and border, then sand, compaction and cleanup.

Do I need a permit for a backyard patio in Sunnyvale?+

A ground-level patio or walkway on your own lot usually does not. Work on the driveway approach, between the sidewalk and the street, is in the public right-of-way and normally needs city approval. We check what applies to your address during the estimate.

Can you add a pavilion or pergola over a paver patio?+

Yes. On our Sunnyvale pavilion project the posts sit on their own footings so the pavers around them never carry the roof load. A covered structure can bring its own permit requirements, which we confirm before quoting.

Do you offer financing for Sunnyvale projects?+

Yes, financing is available. Ask about it during your free on-site estimate and we will walk you through the options.
