Why are pavers a good surface around a pool?
- They stay cooler underfoot than poured concrete in direct sun.
- The textured surface and the joints give grip when the deck is wet.
- Water drains through the joints and off a properly sloped base, so it does not pool.
- A segmented deck moves with the ground. It does not crack the way a slab does.
What happens when the pool plumbing needs repair?
This is the reason many pool owners switch. Pool plumbing and electrical lines run under the deck. With concrete, a leak means cutting the slab and living with a visible patch. With pavers, we lift the units over the line, the repair is made, and the same pavers go back with no sign anything happened.
How much does a paver pool deck cost?
A paver pool deck runs $30 to $50 per square foot installed, including demolition, excavation, compacted base, drainage, pavers, edge restraint and joint sand. A deck with new coping, steps or a seat wall runs $45 to $70 or more per square foot and is priced as a project.
For comparison, broom-finished concrete runs about $14 to $22 per square foot and stamped or colored concrete $20 to $32. For a typical 600 to 900 square foot Bay Area pool deck, a paver rebuild lands between $18,000 and $45,000 depending on size, access and features.
What does a pool deck rebuild include?
- Demolition and haul-away of the existing concrete deck.
- A compacted layered base sloped away from the pool and the house.
- Deck drains where the yard layout needs them.
- Pavers and coping in colors chosen to stay comfortable in the sun.
- Color-matched borders that tie the pool to the patio and walkways around it.
Can the pool stay full during the work?
In most deck replacements, yes. We protect the water and the equipment during demolition and clean up as we go. We walk the site with you first so you know which days the pool area is off limits.

Pool Decks: frequently asked questions
How much does a paver pool deck cost in the Bay Area?+
Most professionally installed paver pool decks land between $30 and $50 per square foot in 2026, including demolition of the old deck, base preparation, drainage, pavers and cleanup. Coping, steps, seat walls and difficult access add to that.
Are pavers slippery around a pool?+
No more than broom-finished concrete, and far less than smooth stamped or sealed concrete. The surface texture and the joints between pavers give traction when wet.
Do pavers get hot in the sun?+
Any surface in full sun warms up, but pavers stay cooler underfoot than poured concrete, and lighter colors stay cooler than dark ones. We help you choose with that in mind.
Can you lay pavers over my existing concrete pool deck?+
Sometimes, with thin overlay pavers, when the slab is sound and the heights at the coping and doors allow it. A cracked or sunken slab needs to come out, because the problem underneath will come through.
How long does a pool deck replacement take?+
It depends on the size of the deck, how much demolition there is and whether coping is being replaced. Larger jobs like a full pool deck can run two to three weeks, and we commit to the schedule in writing before starting.
