What goes into a paver patio that lasts?
The pavers are the part you see. The base is the part that decides whether the patio is still flat in fifteen years. Every patio we build goes in on our Permalast Layered Install System: excavation to stable soil, a gravel base compacted in layers, a screeded bedding layer, the pavers, an edge restraint around the full perimeter and polymeric sand locked into the joints.
The pavers we install are rated up to 8,000 PSI, roughly twice the compressive strength of a standard residential concrete slab.
Why choose pavers over a poured concrete patio?
- Concrete cracks when Bay Area clay swells and shrinks. A paver surface is segmented, so it moves without cracking.
- A sunken or stained area can be lifted and reset. Concrete has to be cut out and repoured, and the patch never matches.
- Tree roots, irrigation lines and gas lines stay reachable under the patio.
- Colors, borders and patterns are part of the design, with no stamping or surface coating to wear off.
How much does a paver patio cost in the Bay Area?
Budget $28 to $45 per square foot installed. A small side patio or dining pad of 150 to 250 square feet runs about $5,500 to $10,000. A standard backyard patio of 300 to 450 square feet runs $9,500 to $19,000. Large patios with seating areas, 500 to 800 square feet, run $15,000 to $34,000.
Difficult access, slopes, drainage work and premium pavers push a project toward the top of the range. When three quotes for the same patio are thousands apart, the low one usually left out base depth, edge restraint or drainage.
What can you add to a patio?
Most patios we build are part of a larger backyard. Because one crew does all of it, the base, drainage and finished heights are planned together.
- Built-in fire pits and curved seat walls.
- Retaining walls that cut a level pad into a slope.
- Paver walkways that connect the patio to the side yard and driveway.
- Artificial turf, putting greens and planting borders.
- Footings and pads for pergolas and pavilions.
How does the process work?
We come out, measure, look at the soil, the drainage and the access, and talk through paver options for your space and budget. You get a written, itemized estimate. Once it is signed, most patios start within one to two weeks and take three to seven working days on site. The same crew stays on your project from the first day to the last.

Paver Patios: frequently asked questions
How much does a paver patio cost per square foot in the Bay Area?+
Most professionally installed paver patios land between $28 and $45 per square foot in 2026, including demolition, excavation, a compacted base, drainage, the pavers and cleanup. Difficult access, slopes and premium pavers push the number up.
How long does a paver patio take to install?+
Most residential patios take three to seven working days on site, plus one to two weeks of lead time after the estimate is signed. Full backyard projects with walls, turf and walkways can run two to three weeks.
Do paver patios need a permit?+
A patio at ground level usually does not. Retaining walls over four feet, gas lines for fire features, electrical work and anything in a front setback can. We check your city during the estimate.
Will weeds grow between the pavers?+
Weeds do not grow up through a properly built base. Seeds can land in the joints from above over the years. Polymeric sand in the joints slows that down, and an occasional rinse and joint sand top-up keeps it under control.
How do pavers handle Bay Area rain and clay soil?+
Better than a slab. The base is graded so water runs off the surface and away from the house, and where the yard holds water we add drains under the patio. Because the surface is segmented, seasonal movement in clay soil does not crack it.
